For I have learned to be content, whatever the circumstances may be. I know now how to live when things are difficult and I know how to live when things are prosperous. In general and in particular I have learned the secret of eating well or going hungry of facing either plenty of poverty. I am ready for anything through the strength of the One who lives within me. Philippians 4:11-13
These past few months have been hard ones for our country. We have watched as our economy has gone crashing down, investments that people once thought were secure disappear, and people are losing their jobs and their homes. It’s tough to watch, and it’s easy to start losing hope, especially if you’re placing your hope in the things of this world. If your job means everything to you, and you lose it – you’ll be quite upset. If you base your worth on the amount of money in your bank account, when the stock market crashes you’ve got a problem.
The drop in the economy has been troubling to me, but it isn’t the end of the world. I’ve seen both good times and bad times, and I know that money, houses and 401ks are not the end-all be-all. They’re just tools. But when we put our faith in Christ, he delivers us not only from our sins, but from the need worry about what is going on in the world around us. We know that he will provide for us, and give us strength when times get hard.
