A week or so ago I put together a massive post with well over a hundred bible verses about money and talked about how we need to make sure that we always put God first in our lives before money – and everything else.
We can easily allow money to become our master, and God can quickly move to the background if we’re not careful.
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:24
One thing that occurred to me in the midst of listing all those verses, however, is that I never really touched on a topic that seems to be especially important right now in the midst of a pandemic and massive job losses when so many people are having a hard time. The idea of looking to God for strength in the midst of hard times.

Today I decided to bring together some encouraging and challenging verses talking about how and where we need to find strength in the midst of turbulent times.

Where Do We Find Strength?
Where do we find our strength? In the Lord our God!
Psalm 46:1-3 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe.
Nehemiah 8:10 Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Exodus 15:2 The Lord is my strength and my song; he has given me victory. This is my God, and I will praise him— my father’s God, and I will exalt him!
Psalm 9:9-10 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
Psalm 34:10b Those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Isaiah 26: 3-4 Those of steadfast mind you keep in peace—because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for in the Lord God you have an everlasting rock.
1 Chronicles 16:11 Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!
Psalm 32:7-8 You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
Exodus 33:14 My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.
Deuteronomy 31:8 It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
Deuteronomy 33:27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
Psalm 34:17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles.
Isaiah 30:15 In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.
Don’t Worry Or Fear, Find Your Strength In Him
It can be so easy to give in to worry, fear and despair, but with Him, we can find strength and look forward to wonderful things. He gives us hope!
Isaiah 43:1-3 Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord you God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
Luke 12:25-26 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[a]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
Philippians 4:6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Psalm 34:4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 27: 1-3 The LORD is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me,it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear;though war break out against me,even then I will be confident.
Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Psalm 145: 18-19 The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.
1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Isaiah 12:2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.
God Gives Us A Spirit Of Strength And Power
Through faith in Christ, we are given a spirit of power, love, and discipline, and for that reason, we have nothing to fear. We can hold onto his promises and be confident that he’ll see us through even the darkest of days.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
Psalm 138:3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
Psalm 16:8 I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Psalm 62:1-2 My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
Psalm 112: 1, 7-8 Praise the Lord! Happy are those who fear the Lord. They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, secure in the Lord. Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid.
Psalm 91:1-2 You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God in whom I trust.”
Psalm 112: 1, 7-8 Praise the Lord! Happy are those who fear the Lord. They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, secure in the Lord. Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid.
Hard Times May Come, But He’s There With Us Through Them All
Though we aren’t promised an easy life, we are told that Christ will be there with us when we believe in Him, that he won’t give us more than we can handle with His help, and even our hard times can be used to glorify God.
2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
Philippians 4: 12-13 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation . . . . I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.
Isaiah 40:29 He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.
1 Peter 5: 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
Hebrews 4:16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Deuteronomy 31:6,8 Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
2 Thessalonians 3:16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way.
Strength In Christ Our Lord And Savior
As the verses above illustrate, we’re told to call on Jesus Christ, and that he will hear us and give us strength, hope, and grace sufficient to carry us through. He will be our ever-present help when we’re in need, and he can give us a peace that passes all understanding. For me, that’s extremely encouraging.

This post is going to be huge while I’m pulling everything together in life. Thanks for compiling this list. I’m going to keep it bookmarked for when times get hard.
I’m glad you find it helpful! It’s funny, even in putting the post together my mood started to improve. It’s funny how the Bible can have that effect sometimes!
I am grateful for this post. I am a 30 year-old wife and mother of four small children. Boy have I made some financial mistakes and some outright poor financial decisions. I feel like only God’s grace is what is going to help me free up the debt in my life and give me a financial miracle.
I can say I wish I came from a background where fiscal responsibility was understood. I grew up poor, but it wasn’t too bad because my mom instilled God in me. My mom didn’t have the financial knowledge. I have repented of my actions as it was greed and a strong desire to live outside of my means when I was in my early 20s, that conteibuted to the situation that I am in now. Simply put, I didn’t want to be a poor adult and I bought everything in the world and hated the thought of saving. I have repented because I don’t want to teach my own children these patterns.
I have to keep my mind focus as before I decided to give everything over to my creator, I used to be severely depressed about my debt. It affected my sleep, concentration and overall quality of life.
Peter, what a nice way to have so many scriptures to rehearse and recite daily. When I do get that miracle, I will share with you all.

I pray for financial break through for you.. I pray that the Holy Spirit leads you in all areas of your life.. I pray generational curses turn into generational blessing and that your kids kids will be blessed through you.
Thank you Peter for giving me people to pray for. We all have these storms that come upon us. What I have learned over the years is that it all starts with our relationship with God and Jesus. Jesus we are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strenght. Roman’s 5:5 The holy Ghost pours the love of God into our hearts so we can love him in return. This is called the Agape love, its unconditional. This site is evidence of that. Thank you all and may the love and mercy of God be upon everyone here.
It is true that i must put God first in my life in every situation i face i cant serve the money and God together but to devoted God and depised another $. l shall not worry in my hardtime bcos God is my refuge and my saviour , He will give me the strength, HE is always be with me and would protect me and supply me everything even much more than i request. In every situation i shall contantly pray, send my petitioners to him and request to made Known to God. With my faith to him i have the faith that He will answer my prayer. Praise the Lord, i glorify you Lord , you are my Lord of Lord and you are my saviour. In the name of Jesus nsme , Amen !

I’m more encouraged now that ever and I have already asked God for forgiveness for not trusting him enough, now I believe I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.

Thank you so much for this. My husband is facing his second surgery and third hospital stay of the year with no sick time left at his work. He could also lose his job since he’s not eligible for FMLA yet, not having been there a full year yet. So, these verses really speak to me right now. I appreciate it.
I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s health issues, I can relate to that to a degree with my wife having had a couple of hospital stays a couple of years ago for over a month. It’s hard to see ones you love suffering like that. Saying a prayer for you..

Wonderful! We all live battling sin. Now, with Christ you will have His strength and victory over your struggles because He is with you. I pray you can remember that salvation has brought you into His Holy presence where we can turn to receive His mercy for all of our shortcomings and the gift of grace to stand. As we continually acknowledge His presence to enjoy Him, meditate on His Word that reveals Him we have everything we need.

We are all here together seeking his grace and his mercy. Our Heavenly Father does not want us to struggle, it is why he sent his son Jesus Christ to pay for our sins. Reading these verses and testimonies makes me realize his way is the only way to make sense of this life. The only choice we have is to put our faith and trust in him. I too, am in a very difficult period, something I never imagined for myself. Father God, please forgive my sins and shine the light of mercy on my path. I have known God since childhood and lost my relationship with him off and on for years now. I am now 45 and I recently accepted the Jesus as my Lord and Savior again. I’m ready to change completely and not go back to living in sin. My fiancé is still wanting to drink alcohol and I don’t think he’s as ready as I am. So I was just feeling down and I stumbled across your website and I got a lot of comfort from reading the scriptures.
I do believe God knows our hearts and I don’t believe we are judged purely by our actions, such as drinking alcohol. I drink red wine, and have abused alcohol in the past (younger days), but I have always loved the Lord and He loves me. Give your husband time and if you think it’s a problem for him then totally get him help. But if it’s a minor indulgence you need not worry. No one is without sin.
Good words Peter, I always love reading your blog. I am 51 years old. I am in the age range where I spend significant time thinking and reading about (and planning for) retirement. I would like to write a blog about retirement (and even that is a very broad subject when you stop to think that it affects every area of life). But, sometimes I think that there are already too many blogs already. What do you think?

Definitely write a blog about retirement, especially from a Christian perspective. It would be appreciated by so many brothers and sisters in the Lord. God bless you sir as you go forward with the Lord’s prompting.
There are a lot of blogs already, but there is always room for more. I’ve also found that at times God has used my blog to reach certain people, who if it hadn’t been there may not have been reached. If God has placed it on your heart, why not give it a try!

I find it hard to memorize scripture when in trouble. I have been through series of turbulent times and what keeps me going are wholesome stories in the bible demonstrating God at work. Christians need to visualize the personality of God in situations. Although I love the verses and I feel like printing them off for display at the dressing mirror.
I will be bookmarking as well, i currently going through a tough time the past three month from accident, transmission went out, another accident, and IRS. I am trying not to have a break down but keeping myself being positive without thinking negative on why i am going through this storm. This is helping me out alot thank you
I feel your pain Annette. We’ve had a rough year this year, three separate hospitalizations for my wife and son, thousands in medical bills, car problems, etc. Having a savior that we can rely on really helps to weather the storm – or storms – as the case may be.
The Lord always..always comes through. His word says he will never leave us or forsake us. Asking why is self defeating, know that He always take care of us and after having these trials and tribulations, and believe me I have gone through them also, He rewards us so much in the end
My only true friend is Jesus. I have helped many people but I always yield ungratefulness.

Thank you for this post. The verses that stood out for me the most are the ones about praising God. We are going through very difficult times right now, my husband has been ill had 3 surgeries over the past 2 years because of this we’ve gotten behind on our mortgage payments. The bank is auctioning our home on November 3rd unless we can come up with what we owe. I’m a single mom. I was faced twice with foreclosure, and if I were to give you a one-word answer to how I got out of losing my house – twice – it’s exactly what you cited in your letter above… The word is ‘Praise’! I started to walk my backyard praising God, walking in circles ..just praising Him.. seven times I did this every day. Not only did the money come in to get us out of the proceedings… I got it in the nick of time;
In 2016 I finally sold my house -by myself- (no realtor) for FULL asking price.. and bought myself a house outright which is a bed and breakfast. It pays for itself!
God is faithful and you nailed it when you said the answer is praising him.

I have just completed hi School but it looks like my dad has given up on me and am now struggling with life..I have tried to seek for God for my refuge but I think am not patient… please I need your prayers so that life can move on well to me…

Rob, my name is Rob too, an 80 year New Zealander. Like you my resources I these times are somewhat thin to put it mildly. Like you totally abandoned by my natural family apart from my beloved daughter who i believe the Lord restored to me.
So how are we meant see what is appending to us. It may seem a strange thing to suggest but for myself I believe “I have never been in a better place”. I have NOTHING in my own strength physically or financially to be rely on. Not enough to even pay for a funeral should that be necessary.
What Peter has posted in the list of about “Having strength in hard times” says it all. What he has so brilliantly listed when you read and ponder upon, verse by verse one cannot help but feel a spirit of hope well up in us. I have been in some very perilous situations on missions to far countries in my life, financially penniless, health wise very very sick (in one situation actually dying from bleeding inside) in totally impossible situations to get out of in the natural. Yet! He I am still writing to you. Why? Or how? ONLY because of the loving kindness and grace of our beloved Lord. It is in these situations that we find ourselves that we truly find out “where our faith is”. That was what why what I expressed above “I have never been in a better place”. I now KNOW who my Redeemer, my God, my Provider is. has it been comfortable being in these situations? Am I comfortable right now as i write to you? NO. Absolutely not. Pain and suffering is not and poverty is hardly a thing to rejoice about. But I can tell your this brother. I KNOW my Lord delivers and provides in ways I could NEVER have dreamed of. Yes too, I have found He doesn’t lack a sense of humour when He answers.
So, be encouraged brother, you are NOT alone, for He Has “I will NEVER leave you or forsake you”.

godknows i needed something, lord you have to pick us up i have fallen please pray for my serenity.
we all have fallen at one point in time. its important to understand that you will not be perfect,but you can always get up dust yourself off and try again. God doesn’t look for perfection, he’s looking for consistency.
The verse that really hit me is 1 Peter 5:10. Lies have been told and I am facing forced retirement. As one who has allowed my career to identify who I am, I am so very lost. I am so very afraid. I am having panic attacks.
I know where I have fallen in my faith, in my church duties, in putting Him first. I have been ignoring his promptings to pursue my own desires, thinking there would always be time.
Retirement would be a blessing, but then who am I? As all retirees, we will cut back on some things. But financially, we will be fine according to our investment guys. But then the doubts…will we really? Are they being honest?
I know this is a trial I need to endure in order to get myself straight with our Heavenly Father. I am past retirement age so who knows how long I have? And I knew retirement was inevitable.
But how to stop the pain and fear…..

I came here tonight to find strength thru a financially hard several months.This evening, I felt my heart sink when my husband looked at me and asked me questions about my inability to contribute to our household in the way that I always been able to, due to being unemployed. The look he gave me was one of “you’re worthless”, seems to stay with me. I felt terrible when he informed me that he’s being stretched beyond his comfort level now that he has to accommodate my bills, since May. I’ve only left him to pay 1 bill of mine…car note. I could so use a little uplifting right now. My career hasn’t taken me where I thought it would or provided me the opportunity to make the money I’d like so I feel like I received a look of judgement this evening. I know resolution will come but days like this make it difficult to reflect on the bright side of things.
My prayer is for strength in times of hardship & in faith!

Helped me i am i a real struggle my family especially my immediate family treats me awful seems like they hate me, no one takes me serious my peers at work have 0 respect for me because my personality is different. The guy i decided to give another chance turns out he just wanted me back to get over his feelings for me so he can move on. The devil has been on me hard for a while now thus same guy gave me an std i still forgave him he’s treated me like crap on and off but i stood by him hoping it will get better. Every relationship i had has failed except with my daughter..im feeling really stressed dizzy and sick. I would really appreciate some support or feedback um feeling really hopeless. The only reason that the enemy is attacking you So much is because God has Great Plans 4 your life. The enemy wants to try and stop God’s plans 4 your life. But he can’t , stay focussed on God and want he wants 4 you , God just wants you to Trust him , that boyfriend of yours sounds like he’s no good , the sooner you leave him be , the better off you’ll be , but I know it’s easier said then done. I have this man that I’ve been through alot with fighting with him over alcoholism. Which was really tough , to the point I almost gave up on him , but I just gave him if over to God , I threw my hands up and said God he is all yours and I can’t do it anymore , God changed this man’s life. He saved him from death , he was killing himself with alcohol , give this boyfriend of yours over to God. Tell him NO, you will not steal my joy. You stated it right, put God first in everything and never on the back shelf. Oh yes, God can really cure HIV, I am hundred percent sure of it. It is just a matter of time. If God can keep people living with the virus alive to this day for more than twenty years, surely soon there will be a cure available. Tonight I had a dream. I’v never believed a dream was ever connected to faith. In my dream I was looking over a ledge with responsibility to help others in need. I failed in fear and dizziness. I felt guilt and rejection. I’m a Christian but then am I ? Iv searched for answers to questions that have been asked for thousands of years. I keep coming back to one person for those answers – God. Good morning. Thank you for this message. I almost going through a tough financial hardship. When you don’t have money to pay for basic needs fear sets in. Although you have faith and trust begging God for money or employment seem to become your focal point at a risk of appearing to be worshiping money instead of God. I asked for forgiveness and instead focus on God providing all my needs as He has promised. I’m weary and hope for a break through. A close friend of mine dad has had major surgery and she is now by his side with her mother and rest of her family, I want to be their so bad for her but she declined me and does not answer any of my calls. I lost my grandpa this year and we really close and ever since he died nothing has been that same. I have lost my hope faith love and joy and I quit going to church.
I’m sorry for the pain you’ve been experiencing due to the loss of your grandpa. I still remember when my grandpa, my dad’s father, passed away at a young age of 67 years ago. I was pretty close to him, idolized him and was so sad when we lost him so young. I don’t completely understand why God took him home so young, but with time the pain has gotten better. We always feel his loss very strongly, but we try to remember the good times he brought us, rather than lament the ones that we had hoped to have. We do have hope to see him again in heaven, and we’re happy that he’s there already, but it’s hard for those of us left behind. I completely understand that in your situation. It’s hard. For me, clinging to the promises in God’s word help to make things better, and give me hope. God is faithful, and is with you. God bless!

I have been going through a very tough time off lately, We recently had to move from my granny’s house because of family feuds and issues, my two uncles just don’t want me to live at my granny’s house even though I was born there and lived there all my life, my mother has worked for the family from a very young age being taken out of school by her parents to go and work to assist them with money. She has sacrificed giving me a comfortable life as her only child because she was putting them first, she could not afford to feed me, clothe and give me a proper education, she even declined three marriage proposals because she was thinking of her family. I am responsible for taking care of my mother and my two sons aged 11 years and 14 months old. Two ladies who are identical twins offered to sell a one roomed shack and a piece of land in an informal settlement in Gugulethu , Cape Town to the value of R9000. Because I was so stressed at home and desperate to find a place which will be rent free, I took the place and moved. Guess what? these twins are giving us a hard time by wanting me eldery mother to play gate keeper during the day when I’m at work, and they also mocking my mother. I have tried to be professional about the matter and tried to resolve the issue as best as I can, but it’s not working. I have paid money to move my wendy house and paid people for transportation of the wendy house and furniture. To date I have paid R6500.00 into the one twins’ account and kept the proof. last week Sunday she came and told that she wants to pay back my money and I have to find another place for me and my family. How cruel, but I have been reading the book of Isaiah 41:10. I feel much better and trust that God will make a way like he always does. I will only move once she has paid me my money in full, but I am also looking a for place now as well. Please help me pray for me and my family. I have asked God to deal with those people who are hurting me and pushing me around, because this is not on.

A hard time is very hard. until we have the problems we can say easily but when we have problems it is very difficult to say from Bible verses.
I lost my job in December 2017. My husband died 12 years ago leaving me with 2 girls who I had to raise alone. I’ve been talking to God to give me strength as it is getting harder. I toss and turn most of the times at night wondering how I will clear the bills, and pay school fees for my daughters. These Bible verses have really spoken to me. Thank you.

Read the book of Isiah 41: verse 10. I know that the Lord is with you all the time, God keeps his promises he make to us through his word. One I have have come to realise is that God’s word never lies my friend. He is and awesome God. Everyone is looking for answers and were looking in the wrong places. Things not from God and what doesnt allign into Gods will. I appreciate this website because people who are in need of love can clearly see Gods love through scripture.
I love how there all put together. Very encouraging and helpful as I’ve sat here this morning looking for verses to help me get through a very difficult time. As I try to prepare my self with my mother’s final days of life it can become very discouraging, I went from a full time employee to a stay at home wife and caregiver to my mom. I do ask for prayers as I’m finding my self over taken with fear, anxiety, stress, and hardship.
The reference verses are of great help to me

God is trying to teach me to trust Him even when the times are tough…I can share the Word, but sometimes I let myself believe that the Word doesn’t work in my life, BUT no more because God is greater than any obstacle in my life. I always find verses like these encouraging ? My contract just ended months ago and I went for interviews in the same company. I have been waiting and waiting but there’s nothing yet. I kept on worrying and stressing until I found scriptures talking about God’s amazing love and that He will never leave me nor forsake me. He is always here with me.
In everything situation, good or bad, I trust my Lord. He will deliver, He always does?

Well… Actually The Bible doesn’t say that He will not give us more than we can handle, because He absolutely DOES give us more than we can handle! In hopes that we will come to the knowledge of the truth that it IS more than we can handle! And surrender to Jesus! When we admit our total and utter defeat without Him we will be given the Full Armor of God! Even then He doesn’t tell us to just sit back and He will take care of it, He equips us! the Armor is for us to fight! He trains us for battle in the Bible! Our skills on how to use the Armor are sharpened when we become more familiar with His voice!
My ultimate goal is to be cleaved to the mind of Christ!!!

The verse that stood out to me the most tonite Philippians 4:6…He tells us to not worry about anything and come to him in prayer and let our request be known to him and he will give us peace like no other…Im glad that he makes it easy for us, i dont know why we have to complicate things…..Ive have stryed away from Gods teachings and have really been asking myself if i am one of his….it brings me to tears to think that i would never be in his grace ever again…i want to ask you if you would pray for me on my behalf and maybe he would hear you….it doesnt feel like he hears me …
